Abstract

The objective of this study was to test if resynchronization with progestagens and estradiol benzoate (EB) increases pregnancy rates (PR) and estrous concentration in Aberdeen Angus cows in a grazing system. 75 suckled multiparous cows, with a BCS of 2.5, were synchronized for the first timed artificial insemination (TAI) using an intravaginal progesterone device (IVD) and 2 mg EB on day 0. On day 8, the IVD device was removed and one injection of Prostaglandin F2α applied, ollowed by 1 mg of EB on day 9. TAI was performed 54 hrs after IVD withdrawal. For the second service, cows were randomly divided into two groups. The G1 group (n=17) was resynchronized 13 days later after TAI with the once-used IVD plus EB 1 mg. A week later theIVD device was removed and 0,5 mg BE applied. After 24 hrs, cows were detected in estrus and AI. The G2 group (n = 17) did not receive treatmentand cows were detected in estrus and AI between days 18 to 26 after the first TAI. PR was analyzed by logistic regression and estrous distribution by theKaplan Meier method. There were no differences in PR between both groups forthe second TAI (G1 = 76.5% and G2 = 82.3%). However, estrous presentation was significantly more concentrated in time in G1, (p<0.001). The resynchronization protocol applying CIDR + EB on day 13 post TAI increases estrous return synchronization in non-pregnant cows without affecting the PR to the second service.
