Los chiriguanos, hoy autodenominados ava-guaraníes, se instalaron entre los Siglos XV y XVI en los Andes bolivianos provenientes de las llanuras paraguayo-brasileñas. Huyendo al sometimiento de otras etnias y a convicciones religiosas, intentaron ser sometidos por los españoles con sus métodos de guerra o evangelización. En este último papel importa en el presente la labor realizada por los jesuitas, que nos legaron una serie de documentos de cómo era esa cultura que quisieron conquistar por la religión pero a su vez salvar del genocidio hispano.
