Abstract

This article analyzes the career path of three professional researchers who actually work in the ―Departamento de Farmacobiología‖ at Cinvestav (Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute). Such scientists –experienced in their work field– set their own lines of research, lead research groups and have reached the highest level at SNI (National System of Researchers). Besides, they come from different disciplines; have specific educational experiences in Mexico and abroad, and belong to unique family paths. Regarding these aspects and their current situation, it was important to examine the processes and events that had taken place during their career paths. Our interpretative work over in-depth interviews made and the analysis of their résumé allowed us to put forward some preliminary considerations by examining the usual ways in which these researchers think about their practice. Such analysis also presents the scientific development as a process made up of structural, casual and local aspects that set successful career paths, including not only their specific laboratory work, strict cognitive skills and cumulative knowledge.
