Abstract

Deseo, según el diccionario de la Real Academia Española de la lengua, tiene dos significados: “Movimiento afectivo hacia algo que se apetece” y también “Impulso, excitación venérea”.1 Quisiera referirme a estas dos dimensiones de la palabra que preside este encuentro en relación con una línea de reflexión sobre el arte del siglo XIX que tomó forma de relato curatorial en 2014 en una exposición organizada en forma conjunta por el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes y la Biblioteca Nacional: La seducción fatal. Imaginarios eróticos del siglo XIX. En relación con ese universo de objetos quisiera vincular entonces ambas dimensiones del deseo mencionadas al comienzo: el impulso hacia aquello que se apetece (los artefactos artísticos) y el deseo erótico suscitado por los cuerpos y las escenas allí representadas. El asunto pone de relieve además varias cuestiones en relación con los problemas que se plantea la historia del arte: la disciplina se ocupa de una amplia gama de relaciones afectivas y cognitivas que van desde la autoría hasta la asignación de valores y significados a lo largo del tiempo. El deseo aparece en el centro de esas relaciones: objetos que suscitan o sacian el deseo de contemplarlos o poseerlos, imágenes que median entre el sujeto deseante y sus emociones.
