Historias de fantasmas y contagios. Nueve noches de Bernardo Carvalho

Abstract

Amazonian space has been repeatedly depicted, mostly by travel narratives, with paradisiacal or hellish images. In Bernardo Carvalho’s novel Nueve noches (2011) hellish images specially reemerge, but combined with phantasmagorical figures, on the one hand, and proceeding by contagion, on the other hand, which means different spaces and times are brought together into contact (contagium) by ghosts or phantoms and by the tense relationships between living and dead. The goal of the article is to demonstrate that the novel intends to display the paradoxes that survive in the heart of any community attempt (Esposito, 2012), overlapping travels, characters and spaces in the triad hellish imagescontagion-ghosts/phantoms.
