Considering several studies about popular participation in independence, we are interested in recognizing some aspects of this participation by analyzing the royalist montonera led by Vicente Benavides. Our hypothesis is oriented to clarify if we can ascribe to a doctrinaire political project such montonera or if its acts responded rather to maintain their autonomy of life. At the end of this paper we conclude that the commitment to the realistic cause that is attributed to him can be qualified because his way of acting does not give us a definitive way to classify Benavides.
