Abstract

La Plata, capital of the province of Buenos Aires (Argentina), is a university town with a remarkable academic and cultural production. The local artists used to defined or nominate themselves as «independent», but this is a category with multiple and complex applications, no lack of tension and in permanent redefinition; a category that has been addressed in various ways, highlighting the problematic intersection between aesthetic, work, economic and political dimensions. In this article we specifically propose to analyze different discourses and representations about «the independent», focusing in the relationships that this category sets with others such as «popular culture», «contemporary art», «official institutions», «autogestive way of production» «mass culture» and «commercial art» in the fields of contemporary dance, theater and popular music in the city of La Plata. We will start with an analytical description of what is observed in each of this three fields, in order to establish crosses and links among them that will allow us to make an integrated interpretation about the senses that acquires «the independent» at the La Plata performing arts field.
