Abstract

This paper deals with rhe meaning and flmction of aspecrual and direcrional aflixes in Pilagá, a Guaycuruan language spoken in severa! enclaves in rhe province of Forrnosa, Argentina. Direcrionals code spatial locarion and rrajecrory of the imransitivc subjcct or the transitive objecr. Aspcctual markers refer ro che interna! temporal consrituency of a siruation. The central poi m of thc discussion that follows is that a few direccional markers also code aspecr. Durative aspecrual -tnpiiii and -tapiyi comain -1íi and -yi, synchronically homophones wirh thc direccionals -ñi and -yi mcaning 'downwards', bur also direccional -pe 'concurrem motion' as in -tnpiyi, -tnpiñi and -(ca) pega 'habi tual'. These t:hrce morphemes sharc the sense rhat evencs are noc bounded in time. Converscly, che forms -rnyi, -tmii, -yi. -lii do not exhibir the direccional -pe, and in all such cases rhc cvem is conscrued as accomplished or finishcd, rhar is bounded in time. T his scudy chus, examines rhe hyporhesis that synchronically, -fíi and -yi 'complerive' originally serve ro code rrajecrory ('downwards') of rhe figure.
