Abstract

The article deals with the reconstruction of past times through a retrogressive constitution, and examines the steps followed by Edmund Husserl in this task. First, apperception or appresentation is analyzed as an empty intentionality that can be fulfilled. Second, retrospective apperception is considered as the time-modality that is directed to the past within the realm of one’s own subjectivity and is fulfilled by recollection and empathy. Next, this analysis is extended to an intersubjective retrospection that marks the way to a reconstruction of the historical past of our and other generative chains. This expansion relies on historical apperception or empathy. Fourth, a further enlargement is introduced in order to include the experience of animals of ancient times, and, furthermore, to cope with times in which there were no human or animal experiences into which we can empathize, but which can be reconstructed on the basis of the traces that have been left behind. Finally, the article explores issues concerning verification and temporality in retrogressive constitution.
