Abstract

En el presente trabajo se dan a conocer las evidencias de actividades metalúrgicas desarrolladas en el pasado en la zona de Azampay (Belén, Catamarca). Los hallazgos fueron realizados en el sitio Campo de Carrizal, adscripto al Período Tardío de la Región valliserrana del Noroeste argentino. El sitio está conformado por un conjunto de núcleos habitacionales que constan de uno o más recintos subrectangulares edificados sobre niveles aterrazados artificialmente, sobre tres espolones de un cerro localizado al sur de la Quebrada de Carrizal. Rodean a los núcleos habitacionales extensos campos de cultivo. En dos de los recintos excavados Esp.2 NH2 Rec. 1 y Esp.3 NH2 Rec.1 fueron hallados restos que evidencian actividades metalúrgicas: fragmentos de metal, restos de fundición, trozos de mineral y fragmentos cerámicos refractarios. En este trabajo presentamos los resultados de los estudios efectuados sobre esas evidencias de producción metalúrgica, en función de los cuales se sugiere que los pobladores de Campo de Carrizal obtuvieron cobre por fundición de sus menas, alearon cobre con estaño para conformar bronce, probablemente en algunos de los crisoles recuperados, y fabricaron objetos por vaciado en moldes y, quizás también, por laminado.

This paper presents evidence of past metallurgical activities in the area of Azampay (Belén, Catamarca). The material comes from Campo de Carrizal site, occupied during the Late Period in the Valliserrana Region in the Argentinean Northwest. The site is formed by a set of habitation cores with one or more sub-rectangular enclosures built on artificially terraced levels on three spurs of a hill located in the southern part of the Quebrada de Carrizal. The habitation cores are surrounded by large agriculture fields. In two of the excavated enclosures - Esp.2 NH2 Rec. 1 and Esp.3 NH2 Rec.1 - evidence of metallurgical activities were found, including fragments of metal and mineral, slag, and refractory pottery sherds. In this paper, the results of the analysis are presented. The analysis suggests that in Campo de Carrizal copper was obtained by smelting, and subsequently alloyed with tin to form bronze, probably in some of the recovered crucibles. In addition, objects were made by casting into moulds and possibly by lamination.
