This article aims to be a methodologic reflection, which is critical towards economic history -in general- and history of economic thought -in particular-. A brief presentation of the typical methodologies of economic thought is introduced, followed by the definition of the limitations that these methodologies have to take on the specific problems of the history of economic ideas -here defined as a field different from that of history of economic thought: the former being more general and the latter specifically referred to the thought of economists-. An attempt is performed to retrieve the possibility of introducing to the history of economic ideas certain general discussions about the history of ideas (Skinner, Koselleck, Palti), about the history of political ideas (Rosanvallon), about the history of political discourse and its hegemonic components (Angenot, Minardi) and about history as narration (Megill, White, Tozzi). In conclusion, the aim is a methodologic discussion about the history of economic ideas, with the critical introduction of different possibilities which are debated in other fields of history and usually absent in economic history.
