Abstract

Ms. 2775 of Biblioteca Nacional de España contains the oldest version of the Crónicas de España, written by Lorenzo de Padilla, Archdeacon of Ronda (1485 - ca. 1569). The codex shows different handwritings, one of which has been identified as belonging to the author himself. Throughout the first two books (fols. 14v-140v) Latin inscriptions are used as a documentary source. Between fols. 141r-161v a Padilla’s autograph quire is included, in which those inscriptions are transcribed, translated into Castilian language and followed by a commentary. This section of the manuscript works independently of the chronistic text and it is most likely the only surviving witness copied in Padilla’s own handwriting. At the same time, this work constitutes a revealing example of the first steps of a scientific method applied to historiography in the Iberian Peninsula. The aim of this paper is to present an edition of the aforementioned quire considering the variants that each inscription exhibits in the Crónicas de España known manuscript tradition.
