Abstract

Emotion regulation (ER) refers to modulate intensity or duration of an emotional state. It has been suggested that executive processes would be based on the ability to regulate emotions; however, the study of this bases has been conducted from different perspectives, so it is valuable to review the studies that show these associations. There are temperamental studies under the effortful control construct (EC) and neuropsychological ones under the notion of executive functioning (EF). Between these two concepts exists overlap so can be beneficial compare them. The aim of this paper is to compare EC and EF constructs conceptually and review studies that have addressed their relations with the ability to ER. We conclude that there is overlap between the two constructs, the differences would be related more to the "tradition" of each approach than to "real" differences and that is evidence to indicate that EC and EF contribute to the ER capacity. We hope this work represents a contribution to conceptual clarification and review of studies that prove of value to researchers interested in the empirical study of these processes.
