Abstract

Fear of crime experienced in a particular social context has become an important issue in quality of life’s studies, because it has become an urban phenomenon that can threat people’s well-being. In this frame, an empirical study was carried out in order to explore differences in social well-being, emotional climate and institutional trust in terms of victimization and fear of crime. A convenience sample was used composed by 126 urban adults of both sexes aged between 18 and 69 years. While the results show good levels of social welfare, there is a high negative emotional climate, low trust in institutions and a high perception of social problems such as insecurity and get a job. Although accurate levels of social well-being are observed, it exist a pre-dominance of a negative social climate, a low institutional trust and a high perception of social problems like insecurity and getting a job. While participants victims of crime have only lower levels of social acceptance, those with high levels of fear of crime show lower social acceptance, less positive climate and greater negative climate perception (hopelessness and fear over security, trust and respect) and less institutional trust.
