El aplicativo -'a en toba

Abstract

This paper examines the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic characteristics of the applicative morpheme -/a in toba (Guaycuruan language spoken in the Argentinian Gran Chaco). This applicative coocurs with transitive and intransitive verbal roots and bases, and it is used to promote peripherical (non obligatory) arguments to the status of core object arguments. The semantic roles of the arguments applied are: allative, recipient, instrumental and pacient. Pragmatically, the argument applied takes a high topic value enabling the derivation of non-promotional passives and the coordination of clauses which topics are no-subject arguments. Finally, we characterize the grammaticalization process observed in the synchronic study.
