Abstract

The objectives of this study were to assess the risk factors for metritis, its effects on milk yield and on reproductive performance, and the efficacy of ceftiofur therapy in Holstein dairy cows (n=303). Cows having clinical metritis (CM) and puerperal metritis (PM) were randomly assigned to control (no treatment) or ceftiofur group (2.2 mg/kg x 3 consecutive days). Blood samples were analyzed for metabolites and metabolic hormones. Data were analyzed with PROC MIXED, GENMOD, PHREG and LIFETEST from SAS. The risk for metritis increased with calving problems (OR [odds ratio] = 2.58), and with NEFA levels (OR= 1.001), and decreased with IGF-1 (OR= 0.65). Cure rates were similar for control and treated cows (~70%, P>0.10), and increased in those cows having BCS ≥2.75, B-hydroxybutyrate <2.75 mg/dl and insulin ≥1.90 ng/ml. Cows with metritis produced less milk by 90 days than healthy cows. Cows with PM took 51 days longer to get pregnant than healthy cows. In conclusion, abnormal calving and negative energy balance (NEB) are associated with increased risk for metritis. In addition, NEB also impairs cure rate. Ceftiofur therapy for 3 days is not effective for the treatment of metritis.
