El archivo como laboratorio: El Fondo Gerardo Gandini de la Biblioteca Nacional de Argentina

Abstract

The initial ordering of the musical manuscripts of the Gerardo Gandini Fund involved a re-constitution of these documents as texts, based on codicological, paleographic, critical-genetic and analytical-musical aspects. The constitution of these documents as hypothetical constructs blurs the distinction between archival work and interpretative critical work and rethinks the very condition of the archive. The G.G. Fund demands an ironic position aimed at both the archive and the documents, reconstituted and fragmentary, opaque in their identity, and stratified in their meaning. The chapter reviews archival and musicological issues related to the ordering, identification, reconstitution and classification of Gandini’s musical manuscripts, considers its implications for a critical-genetic study of his work, and discusses the statute of the Fund as archive.
