Actividad antioxidante y toxicidad aguda de frutos de Prosopis alba

Abstract

Se analizó la actividad antioxidante (método de DPPH Y B- caroteno) y el contenido de polifenoles (método de Folin- Ciocalteu) de los extractos acuosos y etanólicos de frutos de algarrobo (Prosopis alba) provenientes de Termas de Río Hondo y Atahona, reportados por la medicina folklórica como antidiarreico, diurético, antiinflamatorio, etc. Se realizaron experimentos de toxicidad aguda en ratas administrándole dosis de los extractos 100 veces superiores al uso humano. Los animales fueron observados durante 1, 2, 4, 6, 24, 48 horas hasta 14 días. Se detectó un contenido de polifenoles para ambos extractos superior para Termas de Río Hondo. La actividad depuradora sobre el DPPH muestra que los extractos alcohólicos de ambas zonas son superiores a los acuosos y similares a los controles positivos (Quercetina y BHT). En cuanto a la capacidad de inhibir la oxidación lipídica, resultaron más efectivos los extractos alcohólicos y acuoso de Termas de Río Hondo y menores al de los controles positivos. Los resultados evidencian que los animales no manifiestan signos de toxicidad durante el período estudiado. La actividad antioxidante estudiada sugeriría que las vainas de algarrobo usadas como alimento y en medicina popular podrían proveer de beneficios para la salud, más allá de la nutrición básica.
