The purpose of this paper is to critically analyze a recent proposal formulated by Needham in the field of philosophy of chemistry. According to this proposal, the classical Nagellian model of reduction is essentially correct. The fundamental objective of the work consists in evaluating certain ontological implications of this neo-reductionist thesis. In particular, I will argue that the thesis of intertheoretical reduction formulated by Needham presents certain limitations: the proposal neglects fundamental ontological problems that emerge from a careful analysis of some supposedly reductive relations between theories.
