Abstract

In this paper issues related with the acquisition of toolstone used in the manufacture of bola stones recovered at several sites from the Lower Salado River are discussed. These sites are located near a group of permanent and temporary lagoons and near the Salado River itself (Chascomús county, Buenos Aires province). The archaeological remains that have been recovered correspond to Late Holocene hunter-gatherer-fisher groups that recurrently occupied the area. The Salado river lowland is characterized by the absence of rocks useful for flint knapping; therefore toolstone was transported from long distances and there is a general tendency towards raw material conservation. Raw materials used to manufacture the bola stones were identified by petrographic thin sections and macroscopic comparisons. These identifications allow to discuss rock provenience and to compare this information with provenience data for the flaked stone tool assemblages. Issues about inter and extraregional exchange between different groups during the Late Holocene are then addressed.
