Abstract

Las exposiciones han sido un factor fundamental para la escritura de la historia del arte en particular y la historia cultural en general durante las últimas décadas. Las mismas se remontan a otros modelos de interacción social como las ferias itinerantes, las exposiciones industriales o los parques de entretenimiento y constituyen eventos culturales de innegable influencia en la contemporaneidad. En el ámbito anglosajón se llama Museum Studies a una rama de estudios acerca de los museos que propone su abordaje analítico no solamente desde una perspectiva empírico-técnica, museológica, sino también a través de un tipo de reflexión histórica y sociológica sobre el impacto de las representaciones implícitas en los discursos curatoriales de las exhibiciones en la escena cultural. El presente artículo analiza algunos proyectos insertos dentro del programa de Arte de la Oficina del Coordinador de Asuntos Interamericanos, agencia creada durante la Segunda Guerra por el gobierno de Estados Unidos para promover las buenas relaciones con Latinoamérica. Se detiene en particular en las exhibiciones retrospectivas del pintor argentino Emilio Pettoruti, y la exposición fotográfica Brazil Builds, y analiza los debates entre modernidad y autenticidad a que dieron lugar.
