Indicadores para el reconocimiento de represas arqueológicas

Abstract

We propose a set of indicators for identifying archaeological dams. We detail the principle technical and functional aspects: the constructive elements (dam, reservoir, basin, and sluice), the possible sources of water supply (seasonally permanent or temporary river/stream, or rainwater) and their relation with agriculture and irrigation. We arrive at archaeological indicators and expectations, organized into three sections: contextual characteristics (location and association), architectural elements, and stratigraphy, sedimentology and microfossils. We use as an example a structure identified as a dam in Mesada del Agua Salada, in the Yocavil Valley, Catamarca Province
