Abstract

Aguada Portezuelo pottery is characterized by its marked polychromy. Motifs are elaborated in negative and positive, and the colors most used by potters are burgundy -or purple- red, black, white and yellow, being the latter unique for northwestern argentine pottery. Results obtained in this research allow to establish this pottery presents a complex chaîne opèratoire involving at least three technical stages, not only in the elaboration of ceramic pastes but in the decoration itself (pre and postfiring painting) and in the preparation of ceramic surfaces to display the motifs.
