Durante su exilio mexicano, León Trotski se reunió con el escritor francés André Breton. Líder revolucionario uno, referente surrealista el otro, su oposición común al nazismo y al estalinismo daría lugar a un particular manifiesto que reivindicaba la libertad total en el arte. Una historia de ese texto permite reconstruir las encrucijadas políticas de esos años oscuros del siglo pasado, así como su recepción posterior por las vanguardias.
