Abstract

Throughout the 20th century, changes in the ways of thinking and exercising paternity were evident and a new model of paternity was consolidated that highlights the importance of the father in the upbringing of their children. From its origins in 1970, care as a concept and as a native category presents women and the activities they carry out as a preferential subject, the social phenomenon of the feminization of care being spliced with a feminization of the category of analysis. Based on an ethnographic research with parents living in poor neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, I describe and analyze paternal care from an emic perspective, in particular: a) care related to physical protection in situations of violence and conflict; b) actions for the improvement and construction of the home, its surroundings and neighborhood or community spaces. I point out that these aspects, while reproducing the stereotypes of traditional and hegemonic masculinity, are part of the logic of paternal care. Thus, virility and care intersect in the exercise of paternity of young residents of poor neighborhoods.
