Construcciones aplicativas en maká: Morfosintaxis y semántica

Abstract

This chapter describes and analyzes the morphosyntactic and semantic aspects of Maká, a Mataguayan language from the Paraguayan Chaco that is currently spoken in the outskirts of Asunción. If we consider adpositions to be elements that take a nominal complement either by preceding or following the noun and specifying its semantic and syntactic relations, then this language lacks adpositions. However, as is the case with other languages of the world, applicatives fll the gap left by the lack of adpositions or nominal case and allow for an increase in the argument structure of the predicate. From a semantic point of view, these applicatives may be classifed into four types of morphemes, each one with their own markers: eight locatives, fve directionals, one benefactive, and one instrumental applicative. In addition to their syntactic functions, applicatives in Maká are used as derivational devices. They allow the meaning of the verbal root to be specifed or modifed, producing a lexical item with a new or idiosyncratic meaning. A particularity of Maká applicatives is that they are preceded by person markers that agree with the applied object. The above-mentioned characteristics allow us to postulate their possible verbal origin.
