Global Perspectives on Observing Ocean Boundary Current Systems

Abstract

Les systèmes de courant frontalier océanique sont des éléments clés du système climatique, abritent des écosystèmes hautement productifs et ont de nombreux impacts sociétaux. La mise en place d'un réseau mondial de systèmes d'observation des courants frontières est un élément essentiel du développement en cours du Système mondial d'observation des océans. Les caractéristiques des systèmes de courant limite sont passées en revue, en mettant l'accent sur les motivations scientifiques et sociétales pour une observation soutenue. Les techniques actuellement utilisées pour observer les systèmes de courant limite sont examinées, suivies d'un recensement de l'état actuel des systèmes d'observation du courant limite à l'échelle mondiale. Les prochaines étapes dans le développement de systèmes d'observation des courants limites sont envisagées, conduisant à plusieurs recommandations spécifiques.

Los sistemas de corrientes oceánicas limítrofes son componentes clave del sistema climático, albergan ecosistemas altamente productivos y tienen numerosos impactos sociales. El establecimiento de una red mundial de sistemas de observación de corrientes fronterizas es una parte fundamental del desarrollo continuo del Sistema Mundial de Observación de los Océanos. Se revisan las características de los sistemas de corriente límite, centrándose en las motivaciones científicas y sociales para la observación sostenida. Se revisan las técnicas actualmente utilizadas para observar los sistemas de corrientes límite, seguidas de un censo del estado actual de los sistemas de observación de corrientes límite a nivel mundial. Se consideran los próximos pasos en el desarrollo de sistemas de observación de corrientes límite, lo que lleva a varias recomendaciones específicas.

Ocean boundary current systems are key components of the climate system, are home to highly productive ecosystems, and have numerous societal impacts. Establishment of a global network of boundary current observing systems is a critical part of ongoing development of the Global Ocean Observing System. The characteristics of boundary current systems are reviewed, focusing on scientific and societal motivations for sustained observing. Techniques currently used to observe boundary current systems are reviewed, followed by a census of the current state of boundary current observing systems globally. Next steps in the development of boundary current observing systems are considered, leading to several specific recommendations.
