Abstract

Since the 1960s, the term populismo has been used by literary criticism, not as a descriptive instrument but as a discursive tool with performative, ethical, and political claims (Dalmaroni, 2004). What are the problems when it becomes an intervention tool in the literary and political fields? This article focuses on Beatriz Sarlo's reading operations about lo popular, from her strategic place in the configuration of the Argentine intellectual and cultural field. We try to recover the continuities and movements in the critical essays that focus on the presence of populist gestures. In particular, we will work on some of her essays published in Punto de Vista between 1979 and 2006, in the papers published in Perfil between 2007 and 2012 and compiled in Ficciones argentinas. 33 essays (Mardulce, 2012). Finally, we read “Fiesta del populismo globalizada”, a political chronicle written for Perfil in 2015. From this tour, we try to point out the way in which Beatriz Sarlo has drawn up reading protocols for literary and cultural objects in the name of good literary gestures from the premise that populism evokes literary unrest.
