Abstract

The concept of heritability is useful to improve animal populations, either through crossbreeding or selective breeding, by improving certain traits of interest. Low heritability does not necessarily imply that a trait is not inherited; rather, that the variation of such a trait in a given population is very low or the result of environmental factors. Consequently, breeders should not be selected based on that criterion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the heritability of some traits using data from two generations of sows from an intensive breeding farm. Production parameters and 35 behavioral patterns of each lactating sow were registered. Heritability was estimated from mother-daughter regressions. Results of the variance component analysis for production parameters were consistent with the low variation reported in pure-bred animals, suggesting that fertility traits have become homogeneous in animal populations over the centuries. However, some patterns showed genetic variance, leading to expect a response to selection based on breeding improvement programs
