Sobre lenguas ausentes: el paisaje lingüístico como indicador imperfecto. Indagaciones diacrónicas sobre el paisaje lingüístico de Bahía Blanca (Argentina)

Abstract

Los estudios sobre paisaje lingüístico (PL), impulsados por el señero artículo de Landry y Bourhis (1997), han asumido corrientemente que la escritura expuesta en el espacio público refleja la situación sociolingüística pertinente, sobre todo en casos de contacto interlingüístico. Incluso autores que ponen en un lugar central la agentividad de quienes actúan desde abajo, muchas veces contra lo dispuesto desde arriba, suelen asumir que en la escritura públicamente expuesta pueden leerse disputas por la presencia comparativa de lenguas habladas por distintos colectivos, así como valoraciones diferencialmente adscriptas a lenguas diferentes. Ese carácter indicial del PL, sin embargo, no puede sostenerse cuando no aparecen en la escritura pública lenguas efectivamente habladas, ya que solo puede saberse que han sido silenciadas mediante datos diferentes de los del PL mismo. En consonancia con lo expuesto, en esta comunicación nos ocupamos del PL de la ciudad argentina de Bahía Blanca para mostrar, sobre la base de un corpus de fotografías de su espacio público correspondientes a diferentes cortes temporales, que diversas lenguas que la información demográfico-lingüística y las investigaciones académicas demuestran habladas no formaron parte oportunamente de la escritura desplegada en él.
