Abstract

This work describes a stratigraphic profile associated with an archaeological site within the Reserva Natural Cultural Cerro Colorado (30°05’ S63°55’ W, northwest of Córdoba Province, Argentina). This Cultural and natural reserve protects an important heritage of native people. The temporary opening of a gasoduct ditch, lead to an unprecedented finding of the local archaeology: several skeletal human remains belonging to an unknown burial site. Geomorphological description of the study area, stratigraphy analysis and extraction of sedimentary samples for its subsequent granulometric and chemical analysis were made. Based on the field work and laboratory analysis, two stratigraphic levels have been determined. First level, with three sub-levels: 1.1 sub-level or basal of loessoid composition, 1.2 sub-level and 1.3 sub-level interpreted as a paleosol associated with horizons B and A respectively. Second level linked to alluvial-fluvial deposits and which are laterally associated with a terraced level, with three sub-levels and processes of incipient pedogenesis. Furthermore, in the last level anthropic action features and fragments of human bones were identified, which would probably be linked to an occupational level. The recovered information provides paleoenvironmental data to advance in the characterization of the lifeways of local hunter-gatherers during pre-Hispanic times.
