Roma hagiográfica: la imagen de la ciudad y la cultura clásica en la hagiografía hispana de la temprana Edad Media

Abstract

Rodeada de una aureola de prestigio, tradición y leyenda, la ciudad de Roma tuvo, a lo largo de los tiempos, una dimensión imperecedera en la cultura occidental. Evocada como símbolo de una grandeza pasada, núcleo de la religión cristiana, creadora de un extenso imperio, origen de valores permanentes (entre muchas otras posibilidades), la historia romana se presentó como fuente inagotable de recursos discursivos, a los se apeló con diversos intereses a lo largo de los tiempos. Por cierto, esa apelación no siempre fue positiva, lo que llevó a caracterizar esa urbe como origen de muchos males y funestas costumbres. No obstante, aun en esos casos, Roma sirvió como parámetro de referencia, patrón del que la literatura hizo uso y abuso a través de los siglos.Precisamente, entre esas distintas referencias a la Ciudad eterna y su historia se cuenta la que hicieron los diversos hagiógrafos medievales. Ya sea para alabarla o denostarla, Roma es elemento frecuente en la hagiografía (en particular, lógicamente, por su vinculación al desarrollo de la Iglesia cristiana). Nuestro propósito, en esta oportunidad, es realizar un breve rastreo de las diversas alusiones al mundo romano que figuran en los relatos hagiográficos elaborados en Hispania entre los siglos IV y X, esto es, desde el nacimiento de la primeras manifestaciones locales sobre la vida de los santos y mártires hasta los siglos centrales de la Edad Media.
