Abstract

This research reports insights gained into lithic technology developed by hunter-gatherers settled in the southern area of Sierras Pampeanas (provinces of Cordoba and San Luis, Argentina). The study reports the results yielded by lithic analyses of experimental quartz samples. Core reduction via diverse percussion techniques was performed in samples and compared with those collected in the archaeological site of Central Nuclear 2 (Valle de Calamuchita, Cordoba, Argentina). Thus, lithic debitage was analyzed by quantitative methods so as to determine modes of production of lithic artefacts, on the basis of two knapping techniques. Results suggest similarities and differences in the debitage removed by reduction through direct free-hand percussion and bipolar flaking. In addition, results support the hypothesis that these two techniques were being implemented in the site during the first stages of reduction. This study aims at contributing to technological studies of quartz raw material, both at a regional and wider contextual level.
