Abstract

Social desirability, the psychological tendency to attribute to one self the personality characteristics that are desirable socially and reject those that are socially undesirable, produces a distorting effect that if in extreme, can invalidate a psychological measurement. When working with children, the influence of social desirability is more exaggerated, since generally they pretend to show a bettered version of themselves, and in this way they try to be liked by others. The results obtained by the operacionalizacion for children are analyzed, from the Agreeableness factor (based on the Big Five personality factors approach). In the personality questionnaires usually the subjects are instructed to answer honestly since there are no right or wrong answers. However in the answers given to the facets that conform the agreeableness factor (altruism, submission, trust, modesty, sensitivity and rectitude) there underlies an expected ethical, social or moral value. “Curiously” almost all children resulted to be very modest, altruist, righteous, trusting and sensitive. Social desirability is compared in a group of children with risk factors and a group of children without these characteristics. The results we obtained substantiate the construct validity of the agreeableness factor.
