Abstract

La investigación que dio origen a este libro surgió de una simple pregunta: ¿fue acaso Lola Mora la única artista activa en el largo siglo XIX o fue apenas el emergente más celebrado de un grupo nutrido y casi completamente desconocido? Aun reconociendo su centralidad, este libro aspira a presentar otros modos de trabajo de mujeres artistas en la ciudad de Buenos Aires entre 1890 y 1923. Las historias generales del arte argentino han subestimado la actuación de mujeres artistas en el período, reduciendo al olvido la actividad variada e intensa que llevaron a cabo. La investigación de base realizada, largamente pospuesta en nuestro medio, ha revelado un rico conjunto de trayectorias, debates, obras y prácticas que ha permanecido ignorado. A partir de 1890 y a pesar de que las mujeres tuvieron un acceso indudablemente más difícil ala práctica artística, no fueron pocas las que se formaron sólidamente y fueron reconocidas tanto por las instituciones como por la crítica. El discurso de los obstáculos infranqueables que habrían enfrentado las mujeres no se constata y da lugar a un relato rico. La recuperación de sus historias supone cuestionar la docilidad femenina y el carácter menor de las obras ejecutadas por ellas, enfocando en cambio su visibilidad en la cultura del fin de siglo.
