Possibility of an Absolute Foundation of Morality. The Ethics of Immortality of Quentin Meillassoux

Abstract

We report here the proposal of French philosopher Quentin Meillassoux (n. 1967) that it is necessary and possible to assume an idea of absolute justice and therefore justify in an absolute way our commitment to righteous action and other moral values. The rigorous argument of Meillassoux, still novel and surprising, goes against not only various modern conceptions of justice and morality, but also against general conceptions of morality and justice that have occurred in the histories of thought and of culture. His basic thesis, as we present it here, will be displayed through a concept neither theological nor religious of the "divine," (the "virtual God") but a philosophical-rational one (and yet not opposed to science), also it is a refutation of modern atheism and its variants. To clarify the meaning of Meillassoux’s ethics of immortality towards the end we compare them to Kantian ethics, showing how the first solve problems unsolved by the second.
