En el presente artículo analizo el devenir del abolicionismo en el Sexenio Democrático, valorando su empuje y el de los intereses esclavistas opuestos. El artículo comienza con sus antecedentes en la España decimonónica para, a continuación, describir el contexto en que nació la Sociedad Abolicionista Española (1865). Después se desgrana su actividad tras la Gloriosa (1868), prestando atención a los proyectos de Manuel Becerra (1870). Por último, expongo las repercusiones de la legislación de Segismundo Moret (1870) y Tomás Mosquera (1873), ministros de Ultramar que anticiparon la supresión de la esclavitud en Puerto Rico por la Primera República (1873).
