Abstract

This bachelor's thesis discusses Peter Nicolai Arbo and the painting "Bjarke og Hjaltes" død seen in context of the culture and history in the 1800s, which can increase our understanding of the paintings meaning. This text discusses the concepts of medievalism and scandinavism which contribute towards a unique understanding of the artwork. This text will discuss these concepts and how the painting depicts the themes of medievalism and scandinavism. To get a broader understanding of the term medievalism we will look at specific examples like Oscarshall and Bragernes church to explore the concept in different types of art.

Denne bacheloroppgaven tar for seg Peter Nicolai Arbo og maleriet "Bjarke og Hjaltes død" sett i perspektiv fra verkets kulturhistoriske kontekst på 1800-tallet, som kan øke forståelsen av verket og dets mening. Oppgaven tar for seg begrepene medievalisme og skandinavisme som bidrar til et unikt synspunkt til forståelsen av verket. Denne teksten skal ta for seg begrepene og hvordan maleriet kan oppfattes som medievalistisk og skandinavistisk. For å utdype om medievalisme skal vi se på konkrete eksempler som Oscarshall og Bragernes kirke for å utforske konseptet i ulike kunsttyper.
