Abstract

To create sustainable and adaptable school buildings, integrating daylight is important in architectural design. Good daylight conditions facilitate increased flexibility, which is crucial for adapting to changes when needed. Research shows that daylight has positive effects on student´s well-being and cognitive development. Despite this and legal requirements for daylight in classrooms and other rooms, winners of architectural competitions are often schools with limited access to daylight. The purpose of this thesis is to explore a method for early evaluation of daylight in school buildings, and the main research question is as follows: How can a building´s daylight potential be measured in an early project phase? To find the answer this question, the following sub-questions were addressed: * How are the criteria for daylight and views defined in architectural competitions, and how are these weighted by the jury? * What is the potential for daylight in the various school competitions? * How is the actual access to daylight compared to the building´s daylight potential? To answer the sub-questions and the main research question, a case study of competition entries of four architectural competitions was conducted. Competition documents and jury reports were analyzed to see how the daylight parameter is defined and weighted. Furthermore, floor plans from 16 competition entries were measured to investigate the daylight potential using a method developed for this study. The method is based on the building providing sufficient daylight 7 meters in from the outer wall. The results from the examined cases show that there is little focus on daylight in the competition context. It seems the focus on daylight is primarily on classrooms, but not beyond that. The review of jury reports also indicates a need for a universal understanding of what good daylight potential in school buildings is. The measurement results show a dominance of compact school values, which are often characterized by limited daylight access.

For å skape bærekraftige og tilpasningsdyktige skolebygg er integrering av dagslys viktig i arkitektonisk design. Gode dagslysforutsetninger legger til rette for økt fleksibilitet, noe som er avgjørende for å tilpasse seg endringer ved behov. Forskning viser at dagslys virker positivt på elevers trivsel og kognitive utvikling. Til tross for dette og lovfestete krav til dagslys i undervisningsrom og andre oppholdsrom, velges det vinnere av arkitektkonkurranser hvor skolene har begrenset tilgang på dagslys. Oppgaven har som formål å utforske en metode for tidlig evaluering av dagslys i skolebygg, og problemstillingen er som følger: Hvordan kan man måle en bygnings dagslyspotensiale i en tidlig prosjektfase? For å finne svar på problemstillingen er følgende forskningsspørsmål lagt til grunn: * Hvordan defineres kriteriene for dagslys og utsyn i arkitektkonkurranser og hvordan vektlegges disse av juryen? * Hvordan er potensiale for dagslys i de ulike skolekonkurransene? * Hvordan er den faktiske tilgangen på dagslys i forhold til bygningskroppens dagslyspotensiale? For å besvare forskningsspørsmålene og problemstillingen er det gjort et casestudie av fire arkitektkonkurranser for nye skolebygg. Konkurransedokumenter og juryrapporter ble analysert etter hvordan parameteren dagslys er definert og vektlagt. Videre ble plantegninger tilhørende 16 konkurransebidrag oppmålt for å undersøke dagslyspotensiale med metode utarbeidet for studiet. Metoden baserer seg på at bygningskroppen gir tilstrekkelig dagslys 7 meter inn fra yttervegg. I resultatene fra de undersøkte casene er det vanskelig å se at det er et stort fokus på dagslys i konkurransesammenheng. Det virker som fokuset på dagslys kun er rettet mot klasserom, men at det også stopper der. Gjennomgangen av juryrapporter viser også at det er et behov for en universell forståelse for hva godt dagslyspotensiale i skolebygg er. Resultatene av oppmålinger viser en overvekt av kompaktskoleverdier som ofte kjennetegnes med begrenset tilgang på dagslys.
