Mentale prosesser i fotball

Abstract

Dette forskningsprosjektet omhandler mentale prosesser i fotball. Studien undersøker hvordan profesjonelle fotballspillere opplever forholdet mellom mentale prosesser og prestasjon. Datamaterialet er innsamlet basert på et kvalitativt forskningsdesign, hvor seks fotballspillere fra Eliteserien og OBOS-ligaen ble intervjuet. Bakgrunnen for studien begrunnes i nysgjerrighet rundt idrettspsykologiske fenomener i toppfotball, samt begrenset forskning på profesjonelle fotballspilleres opplevelser av mentale prosessers påvirkning på prestasjon. Studien tar primært utgangspunkt i det idrettspsykologiske fagfeltet, hvor tidligere forskning viser tydelige sammenhenger mellom mentale prosesser og prestasjon (Moen & Stiles, 2022; Nesti, 2010; Thelwell et al., 2005; Wieser & Thiel, 2014). I tillegg fokuserer studien på mentale prosesser som en del av den psykologiske prediktoren i Williams et al. sin (2020) modell om ferdighetsutvikling i fotball. Den benyttes for å forstå mentale prosesser i et holistisk perspektiv, basert på store individuelle forskjeller innenfor idrettspsykologiens kompleksitet. Resultatene viser komplekse og sammensatte strukturer rundt spillernes egne opplevelser av og erfaringer med forholdet mellom mentale prosesser og prestasjon. Alle spillerne har på et eller annet nivå et bevisst forhold til hvordan mentale prosesser påvirker sine prestasjoner. Bruk av idrettspsykolog i arbeidet med mentale prosesser fremtrer som sentralt for å utvikle deres mentale ferdigheter. Det opplyses også om et behov for økt kunnskap om effekten av mental trening i toppfotballen. Mental tøffhet fremtrer som den viktigste mentale prosessen for spillernes prestasjon, fordi det gjør dem i stand til å håndtere utfordrende situasjoner og perioder. I et holistisk perspektiv viser resultatene komplekse fenomener, hvor mentale prosesser som selvtillit og mental tøffhet har en gjensidig påvirkning på hverandre, i tillegg til å være faktorer som bidrar til å optimalisere andre sentrale ferdigheter. Det er dermed viktig å forstå samarbeidet mellom flere lag i en helhetlig sammenheng når en skal identifisere profesjonelle fotballspillere med utgangspunkt i mentale prosesser.
