Abstract

Background: Increased wellbeing in the population is a goal for the public health work. Wellbeing is generally high in Norway, however the level of wellbeing is unevenly distributed. International research shows that social capital and sociodemography are closely related to wellbeing. However there is a need for knowledge of how it is related in a Norwegian context. Purpose: To investigate the correlations between social capital, sociodemography and global wellbeing in Agder. Method: This master study has a quantitative cross section design and is based on an analytic selection of 26.166 respondents gathered from the public health survey in Agder from 2019. Logistic regression analysis was used to study the correlations between global wellbeing and social capital, operationalized by the indicators social support, participation, trust and belonging. It was controlled for sociodemography, physical activity, loneliness, and longlasting health issues. Results: The average score for global wellbeing was found at 7,6 with a standard deviation of 1,9 and a median of 8,0. All factors operationalizing social capital showed significant correlation with global wellbeing, and the connection was consistent also after controlling for sociodemography and confounding factors. Social support and loneliness were the two variables with the strongest connection to global wellbeing, followed by work relations and age. The total model explained 39 % of the variance in global wellbeing. Conclusion: In this study it was found that social capital was associated with wellbeing in Agder, not depending on sosiodemography. It will be important that the public health work in Agder aligns itself in a way that promotes development of social capital, across different sociodemographic groups.
