Abstract

The soil’s ability to release nitrogen to plants can vary between years and fields, and also within fields. Optimal nitrogen fertilization is important for farmers’ economy and for preventing nitrogen losses to water and air. A research was initiated in a partnership with Yara Norway with the aim to examine if image analysis could be an efficient tool in estimating the nitrogen fertilization need for winter wheat at an early growth stage. It was also performed a study to see if different amount of nitrogen has an impact on plant density throughout the season. The research was done at 5 different locations, Fredrikstad and Våler in Østfold and Ås, Algarheim and Vormsund in Akerhus. It was conducted registrations with image analysis weekly from the plant was at tiller stage to the heading stage. Registration of plant density was conducted at 3 times: growing start, after second fertilization and after last fertilization. The results showed that image analysis can be used to determine the nitrogen fertilization need for winter wheat at an early growth stage and that this is an efficient tool to add the correct amount of nitrogen to the plants. Regarding plant density, we found that different amounts of nitrogen had no impact, which indicates that under the given conditions other factors than nitrogen is important for regulating the plant density. Image analyse will be an efficient tool to estimate the amount of nitrogen needed. With a high density of winter wheat and good nutrient status at the start of the season, extra nitrogen fertilization for a higher density have no effect.
