Abstract

Abstract. - This master thesis explores four young girls with an immigrant background experience of attending the Music Workshop at K1-klubben, and how they use music in everyday life. The main objective was to gain knowledge about what such an activity has to offer the target group from a music therapeutic standpoint. The study has a qualitative research design where semistructured interviews are used. The girls were interviewed in advance and after the project. Over a two-month period, the girls attended the Music Workshop weekly. The first month they had individual sessions and the last month they were gathered in a group. The music workshop's content varied, depending on the girls moods and what they wanted to do. It consisted of, among other things, karaoke, song writing, music program teaching, instrumental teaching, language training, social hangouts and dance. The findings in the study can be summarized in the main categories: The girls' reflections, social meeting place and musical identity. These findings were discussed against theory of participation, music and identity, music and health, music and regulation. Central music therapeutic fields illustrated in the study are a humanistic perspective on music therapy, resource-oriented music therapy and community music therapy. The common denominator of the participants was that they enjoyed themselves at the Music Workshop and appreciated being challenged to go further creatively, musically and in the face of each other and me as the leader of the group. Keywords: Music workshop, participation, peer community, identity, music, music habits, music joy, emotional regulation, music therapy, qualitative research.

Nøkkelord: Musikkverksted, deltakelse, jevnalderfellesskap, identitet, musikk, musikkvaner, musikkglede, emosjonsregulering, musikkterapi, kvalitativforskning,
