Abstract

This paper looks at makerspaces at universities as possible entrepreneurial communities of practice, where students can acquire practical experience with new technology during their education. The background for this paper is our role as students in entrepreneurship and innovation, and active members at the makerspace Eik Idéverksted (EIK). The paper builds upon a previous study of EIKs role in the innovation ecosystem at Campus Ås (Steien, et al., 2017). The authors discovered that makerspaces such as EIK, which are involved in both the entrepreneurship environment and education, are not adequately accounted for in the literature. The purpose of this paper is therefore to explore the phenomenon with makerspaces at universities that have an active role in the entrepreneurship environment. To do so the paper uses the literature on ‘Communities of Practice’ as an analytical framework to describe the social, contextual and practical learning that can take place at makerspaces such as EIK. Research on recent forms of entrepreneurial education is used in order to look at the application of entrepreneurial projects as a method of learning
