In this study I inquire whether descriptions of an ”old style way of singing” – that also are used in education and many refer to as well – agree with ”reality” as it is presented in archive recordings. The empirical data is collected both in Norway and in Sweden, since I regard the folk music communities in both countries quite similar and that it therefore is possible to treat them as one common field. Six different archive recordings, with six different sources, have been analyzed and compared, based on the presented theory. The result shows that the archive recordings to some extent agree with the descriptions mentioned above. In addition to this, musical unification is looked into. The focus has been on educational institutions and learning methods. Through conversations with some folk song performers, questions concerning changes, practice and norms in folk song have been discussed. Whether there is a musical unification in folk song or not, has not been answered seeing that the amount of empirical data is too limited. For instance has the audience not been asked. However, according to the material I have, I can at least tell that I am not the only one wondering about these issues, parts of the performer community share my thoughts.

I den här studien undersöker jag om beskrivningar som finns på ett ”äldre folkligt sångsätt” – och som används i utbildning och som många refererar till - stämmer överens med ”verkligheten” som den presenteras i arkivinspelningar. Empirin har jag hämtat dels i Norge och dels i Sverige, därför att jag anser att folkmusikmiljöerna i de båda länderna liknar varandra, och att det öppnar för möjligheten att behandla dem som ett gemensamt fält. Sex olika arkivinspelningar, med sex olika källor, har analyserats och jämförts med utgångspunkt i aktuell teori. Resultatet är att arkivinspelningarna till viss del stämmer med ovan nämnda beskrivningar. Dessutom har musikalisk likriktning undersökts. Fokus har legat på utbildningsinstitutioner och metoder för inlärning. I samtal med några utövare av folklig sång, så har frågor som handlar om ändringar, praxis, och normer, i den folkliga sången diskuterats. Om det finns en musikalisk likriktning i den folkliga sången har inte gått att svara på, då empirins omfattning varit för begränsad. T.ex. så har inte publiken tillfrågats. Men jag kan utifrån det material jag har åtminstone säga, att jag inte är ensam om dessa funderingar, men att detta uppfattas utav delar av utövarmiljön.
