Å imitere naturen i dens virkemåte : en undersøkelse av temporalitet i Robert Rauschenbergs White Paintings

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven omhandler den amerikanske kunstneren Robert Rauschenbergs White Paintings. Først drøfter jeg de tilsynelatende tomme overflatene opp mot teorier om stillhet i estetikken fra Susan Sontag og John Cage, og tar dette med videre i en diskusjon om de hvite malerienes temporalitet gjennom blant annet László Moholy-Nagys idé om det transparente kunstverket. Til slutt viser jeg hvordan denne temporaliteten lar seg kobles opp til de White Paintings’ konseptualitet og gjenoppførbarhet. Gjennomgående ligger den vanlige sammenligningen og tolkningen av White Paintings opp mot Cages komposisjon 4’33”, som jeg også prøver å kaste et nytt lys over.
