Abstract

Behandlingsforskning har historisk sett vektlagt positive fremfor negative effekter i psykoterapi. Det er imidlertid nødvendig at også negative sider utforskes og gjøres kjent overfor pasienter, fagutøvere og myndigheter. Denne kvalitative studien utforsker 10 norske psykologers tanker om pasienters forverring i psykoterapi. Dataene er analysert ved hjelp av systematisk tekstkondensering, og drøftet i lys av eksisterende forskningslitteratur. Resultatene viser manglende felles begrepsapparat, lite kunnskap og stor variasjon i hvordan informantene forstår pasienters forverring. Psykologene undervurderer trolig forekomst av forverring i egen praksis. De opplever i liten grad en kultur hvor disse spørsmålene kan diskuteres og flere forteller at tematikken er ubehagelig. Informantene har i liten eller ingen grad fått undervisning, veiledning eller kursing om temaet, selv om de uttrykker et ønske om dette. Studien viser hvordan lite oppmerksomhet om pasienters forverring i utdanning og forskning forplanter seg til den praktiske fagutøvelsen hos informantene. Denne studien er imidlertid ikke egnet til å si noe om funnene er representative for psykologer generelt. Videre forskning bør innhente data om negative utfall fra både pasienter og terapeuter ved hjelp av kvantitative metoder.
