Abstract

Putnam og Campbell hevder i boka American Grace (2010) at religiøst aktive amerikanere er mer tillitsfulle og mer engasjerte borgere enn ikke-troende. Hovedmekanismen er deltakelse i religiøst baserte nettverk, som skal ha en sterkere «moralsk ladning» enn andre typer sosiale nettverk. Rapporten utforsker gyldigheten til dette resonnementet utenfor USA med utgangspunkt i surveydata. I Europa er sterkt religiøse samfunn preget av lavere tillit. Dette taler mot at religiøsitet er en forutsetning for tillitsfulle samfunn. Med noen unntak, samvarierer religiøs tro i begrenset grad med tillit og frivillig innsats, både i Norge og Europa. Aktiv religiøs deltakelse og religiøse sosiale nettverk hadde liten sammenheng med tillit. Slike nettverk øker sannsynligheten for å delta i andre typer frivillig innsats, men ikke i større grad enn annen organisasjonsaktivitet og organisasjonsnettverk. Rapporten reanalyserer også Putnam og Campbells funn for USAs del. Disse analysene peker i retning av en positiv sammenheng mellom religiøs deltakelse og tillit til trosfeller, men negativ sammenheng med generalisert tillit. Religiøst baserte sosiale nettverk øker sannsynligheten for annet frivillig arbeid, men i mindre grad enn sosiale nettverk i sin alminnelighet.
