Abstract

The concept and handling of Malnutrition has changed according to the main paradigm. The United Nations Children's Fund launched a “new conceptual framework” to deal with the problem. One of the key points is its acknowledgment as a biologic manifestation of the combined effects of an insufficient ingest and the illness itself, closely linked with social and economic development. In higher education, text books remain as the prevalent representation mode within the learning process. The general goal is to compare text books aimed to the teaching of Malnutrition content in Argentinean Public Universities in Tucumán, Córdoba, Rosario, Buenos Aires and La Plata, during 2013 year, in order to enquire how is this topic approached. Through a descriptive, qualitative and semi-qualitative research, text books backed up and complemented with Academy member’s opinions have been evaluated. Most text books used in the colleges analyzed do not have a cross-discipline approach appropriate to the new academic training paradigm. They are focused in concept knowledge and have given a passive role to students and teachers. The pediatric courses do not have any evaluation analysis resource to select mandatory reading material. It can be concluded that the medical training paradigm implicit in Argentinean Public Universities is the Hegemonic Medical Model.
