This Doctoral Thesis was aimed at evaluating acute toxicity of an Endosulfán commercial formulation (ED) for three neotropical fish species (Prochilodus lineatus, Cichlasoma dimerus, and Piaractus mesopotamicus); and detecting sublethal changes of stress markers in fish exposed to ED alone, and combined with the pyrethroid λ-cyalothrin. The ED LC50-96h values for P. lineatus, C. dimerus and P. mesopotamicus were 3.6, 3.7, 17.7 µg∙L-1, respectively. The highest ED concentrations altered hemoglobin content, and increased significantly the white blood cells count (WBC) and lipid peroxidation levels (LPO) in P. lineatus liver, intestine and brain; and in C. dimerus gills, hepatopancreas and brain was observed. P. mesopotamicus exposed to a combination of ED and λ-cyalothrin showed a higher liver-somatic index and WBC, and an outstanding alteration of leucocytes compounds. Changes in transaminases involved an activity reduction in liver of fish exposed to the mixture. Last, the mixture of both pesticides produced an enzyme induction in all organs, accompanied by a significant increase in the liver, kidney and brain LPO levels of P. mesopotamicus. The results obtained in the present Doctoral Thesis showed that exposure to ED, used individually and in combination with another insecticide, produced hematological changes which are related to the immune system, alteration in metabolic and antioxidants enzymes, and induction of oxidative damage in vital organs of the neotropical fish species P. lineatus, C. dimerus and P. mesopotamicus.
